St. Joseph Medical Center Appoints New Chief Medical Officer, Stephen Nesbit, DO, MBA

St. Joseph Medical Center announced today that Stephen Nesbit, DO, MBA, has been appointed as chief medical officer. In this role, Nesbit will oversee quality, patient safety and service and serve as the liaison between the medical and administration.  He will also be responsible for leading the graduate medical education programs. 

“We look forward to Dr. Nesbit’s contributions in the critical role of chief medical officer as we pursue our goal of becoming a center of excellence,” said Kim Bassett, RN, MBA, and president of St. Joseph Medical Center. “His deep expertise, variety of experience, and knowledge will be beneficial to our team as we continue to strengthen our commitment to providing Houstonians with compassionate, personalized care.”

Before joining St. Joseph Medical Center, Nesbit served as the chief medical officer for HCA Gulf Coast Division, responsible for all clinical and quality services across HCA’s Divisions 15 acute care hospitals and two specialty hospitals. Prior to his time at HCA, Nesbit was the chief quality officer and chief medical officer for Via Christi Health, the largest health care provider in Kansas.  He has 30 years of experience as a board-certified family physician, with the last 18 years focusing on physician executive roles for both hospitals and health plans.

Originally from Beaumont, Nesbit graduated from Lamar University with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. He completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Health Sciences Center in Kansas City, Missouri. Board-certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, Nesbit has practiced in a traditional family medicine practice setting and as an emergency room medical director. While in private practice, Nesbit also completed a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Houston in Clear Lake and holds a Lean Six Sigma certification.
